I trust that all of you are having a Merry Christmas this year. It sure is different not having Mom with us. I wanted to let you all know that I have finished scrapbooking our 2008 family reunion, Mom's last days, her funeral, Aunt Pauline's funeral and the Bougher 2009 reunion. If any of you want copies for your heritage albums, I can make the copies and put them in the same protector sheets that you have and mail them to you for $25.00. I have 44 new pages to add to the album that you already have. If you want them. please let me know and get me the money by January 31st. I really would like to make all of the copies at one time.

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and that it was also very "filling" for everyone.
I go back to Emory on Dec. 2 for more testing. He is determining if I need to be on the liver transplant list right now, but has informed us that I will be facing one sometime in the future if not now. But, I'm hoping and praying for good results. He states that I will have to have an MRI every 6 months since this type of liver disease has a much greater chance of turning into liver cancer, but we are just taking every day as it comes.
Donna will be having eye surgery again (this time on her better eye) on December 8th, so please keep her in your prayers.

Family, has anyone seen Mom's pink grandmother's fan vest? It is hand quilted and has "Geneva" sewn in front. I thought I had brought it home, but apparently did not. I really would like to have it, since I made it for her. Please, could you look for it? Thanks, Berdena

Family, I talked to Pierce today at home. He said he is feeling a little stronger. He is down to one antibiotic, and has a lady coming in to clean and cook for him. She is Margaret, the same one he had to help with Fannie Mae. She cooks good things! I know this because she brought food for them while I was there. The ladies at the church found out he likes soup, and bring him all sorts of homemade soup. He was glad to hear from me, and would love to hear from all of you. He said he fired his doctor, and is going to see his pain doctor to ask for a referral to another doctor. It was good to talk to him.

Hello everyone! I will be going to Emory in November to see a liver specialist and am anxious to see what he has to say. If I could get my strength/energy back, then I would be a happy camper. But I have found out this week that the liver is also causing a lot of pressure to build up in my ears. I feel like I'm talking in a box most of the time and after several test and consultation with the ENT specialist, they are 100% convinced that it is being caused by the liver. I sure didn't realize that the liver controlled so much in your body. But I've just put it all in God's hands so I'm sure things will work out like they should.
The reason for writing is to let everyone know that the Carolina Crossmen now have their new recording for sale. It may be ordered by going to their web site at carolinacrossmen.com. The song on the album (#6) is the one which Dan sang at Mom Fiskeaux's funeral. The web site requires the use of a credit card. If you don't want to use a credit card, then just send a check for $18 (15 plus 3 shipping) and we will get it to Dan or you can also send the check to him. I feel like this is the best recording ever, but then again, I may be a little biased.
Hope everyone else is doing fine.

Dad in OMC Hospital room 506 for breathing and electrolites. Will build up his strength and breathing treatments, antibiotics continue. Will advise of changes. Hospital # 864-882-3351ext.3506 to call him. Privacy # for his status is 0108.
Also an update on our Hannah. Saturday she was taken in because of severe pain in her lower abdomen. They believed it to be an appendicitis so sent her to the hospital for a cat scan which came back showing she had a cyst on her left ovary the size of a grapefruit. They did emergency surgery on her. They preped her about 1:30 am Sunday and by 3:00 the dr. had Faith call me so that he could tell me how surgery went. He made 2 small incisions, drained the cyst and removed it along with a couple smaller cysts. He also had to remove her left filopian tube because the cyst had twisted the tube and cut off blood supply which made the tube begin dying. But she was release Sunday afternoon around 2:00. They have been resting today and will head back to school this afternoon. Oh they were at a lake house this weekend because the girls were going to sing at a church in Longview, TX. The pastor rescheduled them.

The tests came back that he has a Mrsa staff infection, which requires antibiotics and other medication. He was concerned, as he has lost weight. His family are checking on him daily. He sure needs our prayer and support.

Garrison's quilt is given away. One of the teachers at the elementary where I taught won it. I know he will value it and take care of it. Now we can get on with other things. It took a major effort this past year. But the scholarship fund is large enough to start giving a scholarship this next May to an agricultural student. The quilt brought in over $3000. I am glad it is finished

Just wanted to give everyone an update and ask for continued prayers. I had more testing done yesterday and it seems everything falls back to severe liver damage. I guess the next thing on their agenda is going to be a liver biopsy when my blood will start clotting better. Until then, it seems that they cannot do that due to the bleeding involved with it. One of the docs told me that it wasn't a bad procedure and that he used to sell parts of his liver for testing when he was in medical college. I told him he was crazy!!

I just returned from the Bougher reunion. There were 42 present. They had a white elephant auction sale that was a lot of fun. They raised $573.00 to cover the expenses of next year's reunion. I framed a picture of Grandma when she was a girl. The one the Ed gave us taken in front of the log cabin in Illinois in 1895. It sold for $40.00. Caren, Michael's wife, made a scrapbook of the Bougher family and it sold for $125.00. They had a lot of other things as well. It was really fun.
I need to communicate to you that Luella passed away Thursday of this week. Her viewing will be this Monday evening and the funeral Tuesday. Harold is still living at a son's house in Burlington. He in wheelchair bound and on oxygen 24/7.
Bill was elected as the next president of organize next year's reunion and Kolaya, his sister, is the secretary. They voted to have it August 7, 2010 at the Sheridan Public Library again. This is pending that we can rent the room again. The subject of our reunion did not come up so I didn't bring it up. Neither Mary Ruth nor Judy were there.
I met Pat Robertson and had a wonderful talk with her. Her grandmother was Grandpa Bougher's sister, Nettie Bougher. She has done a lot of family history study of our family and is going to share it with me. I am giving her all of our side of the family's information.
Linda, we are continuing to pray for you and trust that God works a solution out for you other than a liver transplant. Gerald did say that they are usually very successful though.
Dena, we will pray that Gene's knee problem will be resolved.

Donna,Isabel, Frankie, Berdena, Thanks for the update on Linda. We're praying for her healing and hope that a transplant won't be necessary. Thanks to all of you for the messages and updates. We check the site daily. Frankie, we are glad that you were'nt seriously injured in the accident. Gene, we pray that your swelling will go down and the tests will turn out allright. As for me, I still have the same pain problems.I still pray every day for God to heal me of all the pain and take it away. All of your prayers for this would be appreciated. Paul says that no post offices in our county are scheduled to close. I know that we all need God's help and healing touch, so let us turn all of our problems over to him, and let us trust Him to take care of us all.

Yes, Frankie, we also are thankful that God was with you. And we will pray that Linda will continue to heal. Thanks for the info on the website!
Gene has been having tests to determine why his legs are swelling. Heart and kidney tests showed they are healthy. A sleep apnea test showed he has some apnea and restless legs syndrome which could be causing the swelling. He will have further tests on the 18th and 25th. (He cannot have knee replacement until the swelling problem is solved.)

Just thought I would let the family know that I was in a car accident yesterday, Aug. 4th, around 5 pm. I was almost home and waiting in a turning lane to turn left. I waited for 2 cars to turn, then proceeded to turn left and uh oh, there was a car a few feet from me and we hit almost head on. It was hidden behind one of the cars that was turning and I did not see it. I am at fault for failing to "yield" so my insurance pays the cost. Oh Goody!! NOT! I have some bruises and the young lady has a few hurts but I think she will be okay. I am so thankful that God was my co-pilot and used the airbags to protect me.

All of the blood tests came back negative for any particular viral/bacterial/genetic reason for the liver damage. My mom has been officially diagnosed with NASH (Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis). Here's a decent website that discusses the disease: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/nash/ . She is doing feeling a bit better, day by day and her energy is slowly coming back. She's lost over 20 pounds since coming home from the hospital. Most of it was fluid and also due to the fact that her diet is fairly restrictive (basically low-fat vegetarian). They have repeated her blood work and if all is well, they'll do a colonoscopy and an upper GI - basically starting the tests involved in getting her on the transplant list. We're all hopeful it won't come to that, but they wanted to go ahead and start the ball rolling, just in case. We'll keep you guys posted with any news.

I just talked to Linda. They have diagnosed her with cirrhosis of the liver. Her liver is functioning at 25-30%. She is quite weak and has lost a lot of blood. She is on quite a few medications and will be going to Charlotte Medical Center to be possibly put on a donor list for a liver. She has also been put on a very strict diet and will be out of work for at least 3 weeks. They will see how it goes. They are taking a day at a time. Hi all . . . it's our understanding that as of right now - there's nothing they can do to "treat" the liver until they know what the source of the damage is and if it's reversable or not. That's what we're waiting on from the blood tests, which should start trickling back in hopefully tomorrow. They know it's not the normal/obvious sources of liver damage (i.e. drugs/alcohol), so they're looking for viral, bacterial and/or genetic components to try to understand what's going on. Depending on what the results show - a biopsy may be necessary as well, it's just too early to tell now. If the damage is something that is reversable, then they may be able to treat it with meds/surgery. If it's not reversable and her liver is too far damaged, then we were told that a transplant is not out of the question. We should know more as the week progresses.
She is feeling marginally better today and has a bit more energy and strength. As of breakfast this morning, she still hadn't ate any solid food. Hopefully she'll feel up to it at some point today. With her current rate of recovery, I'm guessing she may get to come home tomorrow or Tuesday. I'll keep you posted.

Here's the latest - my mom is out of ICU now and is in a regular room (Rm 274 at Harris Regional Hospital, Sylva, NC 28779). The upper GI showed a row of small ulcers in her stomach and varicose veins in her esophagus. An ultrasound showed that her spleen was enlarged and her liver was surrounded with fluid. Her liver is damaged with current estimates that it's functioning at 20-30%. According to the docs, the liver is the cause of all the other problems and is obviously the main concern. She was given 6 units of frozen plasma and 2 units of blood last night and they're taking blood every 4 hours. We're currently awaiting blood test results for a variety of things to try to determine the source of the liver damage. The results should trickle in throughout the week. She should be able to come home once they've determined that her blood counts are stable and she's feeling well enough to be up and about - hopefully in a day or so. We'll keep you posted, please keep her in your prayers.

When Patti read the earlier comment about Mom wanting to see Dad's hands, she felt compelled to write this "free verse" as it came to her. So this is written about her father-in-law, but from the perspective of one of the Fiskeaux children. Thank you, Patti.
My Father’s Hands
My father’s hands
Were knotted and crippled
And misshapen from polio.
But he grew up using
His own wits to survive
And learned to use those hands well.
Those hands held books
And clutched pencils in seminary,
Helping to feed an inquiring mind.
Those hands held the hand of Geneva,
The love of his life
And steadied her through the years.
Those hands shaped the lives
of the ten children born to them
And held a small boy while preaching one day.
Those hands turned the pages of his Bible
And served the heart that
Sought the Spirit of God.
Those hands learned to do
Precision machine work
That was respected for its amazing accuracy.
Those hands planted seeds and tilled the soil,
Drove the tractor and harvested the bounty,
Growing food for his family and a little to sell.
Those hands could not manage some things,
So he taught his sons to do what he could not,
Taking things apart and making them work again.
Those hands grew weaker as he aged,
Grasping the walker and sometimes letting go,
Resulting in a fall.
Those hands grew quiet one cold winter day,
And he breathed his spirit away to God.
The crippled hands had served him well.
Today, those hands are no more crippled,
But strong and straight as he grasps the hand of his Savior and
Reaches the other to bring Geneva Home.

For all of those who are reading this web site, Grandma Fiskeaux-Upton is not doing well at all. She is back in the hospital due to the fact that the pain became more than could be tackled at home. The doctors have now confirmed that the mass has spread to her liver. She is being heavily sedated with morphine. Please just keep her in your prayers and ask that God's will be done and pray that she doesn't have to suffer very long. She has made the comment to both Dena and Harvey that she is wanting to see Charlie's hands. So, we all know that she knows the time is drawing closer.

Dena called last night and stated that Harvey and Nancy are coming in today, June 5 and will be there until Wednesday (which is the day Frankie gets in). So, I will not have to take off at this time to go down, but am more than willing when needed.
Seems that Grandma had a rough day yesterday. Pain was pretty bad and she took her pain med last night and then threw it up. Of course, there is nothing on her stomach, but just bile. She took another pain med and they were putting the hot pad on her to try to help ease the pain. Dena said that when she got relaxed, she was going to put her to bed.

Grandma is now home. She came home yesterday afternoon (Monday). She is on IV's and pain medication. The home health nurse comes out every day to check on the IV and change it. Per Dena, she is still having to take the pain meds about every 4 hours.
Dena will be there thru Monday, June 8th. Frankie will be coming in on the 10th. I'm taking off work and going down on Monday evening and will be there thru the 10th until Frankie gets there. After Frankie leaves, Izzie will be taking her turn. Lurinda will be cooking some meals and bringing in for Pierce and whomever is there, so that person will not have to worry about meals also. That will be a big help.

Berdena is at Grandma's visiting with her; however, she is back in the hospital. She has not been able to keep any food or drink (including water) down for at least 1 1/2 days. Another CATSCAN was done this morning and the doctor talked frank with Dena, Pierce and Grandma. He told them that this is possibly a malignancy. The doctor who did the test in Anderson does not wish to do a biopsy on her. She is going to be on IV's only for at least 48 hours and then might go home with a shunt so that a nurse can come out to administer IVs to her at home.
Her hospital phone # is 866-885-7519 (Privacy Code is 0271)
Dena asked that I put this out on the family website for everyone to pray about.

I spoke with Mother yesterday and she told me that when the doctor did the ERCP test he told her he did not see any mass on her pancreas. He said it was inflamed, that she had probably passed a stone, and that he did not see any small stones there. Mother asked that we pray for her because the doctor said she could not eat any more fat. I told her to remember the pain she has been in and that will help her be able to stay away from that fat. Hopefully the hospital will help her know how to eat to prevent any further problems with her pancreas. I am very thankful to the Lord for His touch on her.

Mark spoke with Mom's doctor yesterday afternoon and, thanks to Mark, they have scheduled the ERCP test at the Anderson Hospital for tomorrow, Friday. Oconee Memorial Hospital will transport her to the Anderson hospital in the morning and bring her back in the afternoon. They will not at this time be doing a biopsy. They want more information first as to the status of the pancreas. She continues on the IV fluids and fast. If necessary I am sure that they can do the biopsy at Oconee Memorial.

Mark called me this morning and asked me to give you all an update. He spoke with Mom's doctors this morning and they were pleasantly surprised with the results of the blood work from yesterday. Her pancreatitis isn't as bad as they had thought originally. She did begin having abdominal pain again when they gave her some tomato soup and pudding yesterday, so the doctors have put her on a complete fast. She can only have water and ice chips. They began the IVs again and are even giving her all medication IV so as to give her pancreas a total rest. There is nothing they can do for pancreatitis except let it heal itself and the most that they can do to help this is to let it rest, hence the fast. The length of fast will be determined by how fast her pancreas heals itself. They are not doing the ERCP test today because of the stress it would put on the pancreas. They are going to wait untill it heals some and then schedule her for it. She will remain in the hospital for now because of the IV and fasting situation being that she is a diabetic. She is feeling better, however, seems to be in good spirits, and Mark thinks she and Pierce understand the doctors treatment plan. We have to simply wait and pray that God will work out His will in her life.

I talked to Mark this morning. He was at the hospital and talked to Dr. Booker this morning. It appears that this morning test are off and he is talking of sending Mom home temporarily and then scheduling some type of test on her pancreas in Anderson for next week. I am somewhat doubtful that she and Pierce can take care of her at home right now. If they continue to keep her on the clear liquid diet, plus the complication of being a diabetic, and her not wanting to eat or worse drink, and given the pain that she has been in to have needed IV morphine, I really doubt whether Pierce and Mom can balance all of these things at home by themselves. Mark is to go to the hospital tomorrow morning and talk to Dr. Booker again.

I talked to her nurse yesterday afternoon and they are doing tests this morning. Yesterday, they were waiting on Mark to come in. The nurse practitioner who is working with Dr. Booker, was not satisfied that Pierce was understanding what she was explaining so they wanted to talk to Mark. The nurse was to call him when he came in. I called and left a message on Mark's phone but have not heard anything yet. The nurse did confirm that she has pancreatitis and when they did the CT scan Saturday, they found a mass above the pancreas. They have her on IV morphine and she is becoming confused, I hope from the morphine. She was very dehydrated and they have her on a clear diet to treat the pancreatitis. I hope we get some more news today after the tests. We have to wait until the doctor talks to Mom before the nurse can release any new news to us.

It's a boy! Our second son will be named Perrin, after one of our favorite literary characters. His middle name hasn't been decided on yet. :)
